Abstract:
The distribution of the Eurasian Pygmy Owl
(Glaucidium passerinum) in Central Europe is
mainly associated with conifers and altitudes
above 450 masl. In 2023 and 2024, two nests
were found at two sites in lower altitudes
(264 and 410 masl). In the first case, it was
a smaller lowland oak forest, adjacent to
fields, meadows and the built-up area of the
village, and in the second, it was an almost
pure younger beech forest with a nest cavity
only 20 m away from the asphalt road and
meadow. Both sites were characterized by a
higher number of trees with cavities, a
smaller number of dry stumps and a higher
biodiversity of birds. In the paper, there are
discussed also other examples of the species
breeding in broadleaved forests of lower
altitudes.
